The Palms restaurant is housed in the historic Imperial Building in Dunedin, designed by Mason & Wales and built in 1906.
Originally the building had four stories, with the fifth floor being added in 1927. The Palms has operated as an eating-place for almost 70 years. First as tearooms then a vegetarian café until finally it became a fully licensed restaurant.

The Palms sits immediately opposite the Queens Gardens with its towering Cenotaph and the statue of a regally austere Queen Victoria.
And between the gardens and the Palms, traffic almost
incongruously streams by in waves along Cumberland St.
This only seems to emphasise the serene, intimate atmosphere of the Palms where, behind the expansive plate-glass windows
diners feel far removed from the bustle.
